A wall mounted washing line gives you the full drying space when you need it and almost none when you do not. Ours folds flat against the wall, so the yard, the courtyard or the side passage goes back to being usable the moment the washing comes in. Why wall mounted works better than a pole in a South African yard

Most yards here are not big. A T-pole or a rotary line needs a concrete footing, takes up the middle of the space permanently, and still has to be dug in. A wall mounted washing line uses a wall you already have, needs no footing, and folds away when the washing is dry.

It also takes the heavy things. Blankets, duvet covers and large towels are what break lightweight lines, and a rigid aluminium frame fixed to brick does not sag under them the way a rope strung between two poles does.

Heavy duty, in the build rather than the wording

Plenty of lines are sold as heavy duty. What matters is what they are made of. The brackets here are aluminium, so they cannot rust, and the powder coating resists chipping, fading and scratching in full sun. Every fixing is stainless steel. The line itself is PVC coated over a polyester core with UV protection, as are the shoulder washers, which is usually where a cheap line fails first.

Fitting one

It mounts to brick, plaster and most standard walls. Because it arrives assembled, you are fixing it up rather than putting it together. Frequently asked questions

Question: How high should a washing line be?

Answer: Shoulder height for the person who hangs the washing most often is the usual rule, roughly 1.5m to 1.7m off the ground. Mount it high enough that a duvet cover clears the paving, but low enough to reach the back line without stretching. On a wall mounted line, measure from the ground to the lowest line rather than to the bracket.

Question: What type of washing line is best?

Answer: It depends on the space. A rotary line suits a large open lawn. A retractable line suits a narrow passage but holds little weight. A wall mounted foldable line suits most South African homes, because it gives a full load of drying space against a wall you already have and folds away when it is not in use.

Question: How long is a standard washing line?

Answer: There is no single standard. A rotary line typically carries 40m to 50m of line across four arms, a retractable line about 4m to 5m per strand, and a wall mounted foldaway somewhere between 10m and 15m. Ours carries 13 metres, which handles a full machine load including towels and bedding.

Question: Will a wall mounted washing line damage my wall?

Answer: Not when it is fitted correctly. It fixes into brick or plaster with stainless steel bolts spread across the bracket plate, so the load is distributed rather than concentrated.
